What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?
SSY is a government savings scheme for girl child, part of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'. It offers high interest (currently 8.2%), tax benefits, and helps save for daughter's education and marriage.
Who can open SSY account?
Parents/legal guardians can open SSY account for a girl child from birth till she turns 10 years old. Only one account per girl child. A family can open maximum 2 accounts (for 2 daughters).
What are deposit rules?
Minimum deposit: ₹250/year. Maximum: ₹1,50,000/year. Deposits must be made for 15 years. Account matures when girl turns 21.
Can I withdraw before maturity?
Partial withdrawal (50% of balance) allowed after girl turns 18 for higher education/marriage. Full withdrawal allowed at age 21 or after marriage (after 18).
What are tax benefits?
Triple benefit (EEE status): (1) Deposit qualifies for 80C deduction up to ₹1.5L, (2) Interest earned is tax-free, (3) Maturity amount is tax-free.
